DMX Tool

DMX Refresh Rate Calculator

Calculate DMX frame time, max refresh rate (FPS), and update latency from slot count, break time, MAB, and slot duration. Targets the dmx timing refresh rate query.

Calculate DMX frame rate and latency

Adjust active slots and timing parameters to see frame time, max FPS, and whether your setup meets the 30 FPS minimum for flicker-free moving lights.

How to use the refresh rate calculator

  1. Set active slots to the number of channels you are sending (1–512).
  2. Leave timing parameters at standard values unless your controller uses custom timing.
  3. Read the frame time, FPS, and flicker-free indicator.
  4. Use the high-speed preset or reduce active slots to push above 30 FPS.

Notes

Standard DMX

Full 512-slot DMX at standard timing gives roughly 44 FPS — above the 30 FPS flicker threshold. Reducing slots improves refresh rate proportionally.

Flicker threshold

Moving lights and LED fixtures generally require 30 FPS or more for smooth, flicker-free operation. Strobes and pixel mapping may need higher rates.
