Live Show DMX Timing Checklist

Timing issues are the most common cause of “why does my DMX feel off” queries. This checklist helps touring crews prove timing before each show.

Step 1: Measure refresh expectations

  • 512 channels ≈ 22–30 ms per frame, but fewer channels refresh faster.
  • Document your universes and expected refresh per show format.

Step 2: Test jitter

  • Run slow pan + dimmer fades. Look for hops or flicker.
  • Compare a USB dongle vs hardware node—record the timing behavior.
  • If USB jitter shows, switch to a node with hardware buffer.

Step 3: Cable + termination validation

  • Use DMX-rated cable, avoid mic cable, and confirm the last fixture is terminated.
  • Check splitters—passive Y-splits cause reflections.

Step 4: Repeatable practice

  • Document the timing test results on your patch sheet.
  • Share a “timing pass/fail” log with the crew.

Reference the DMX Timing & Refresh Rate guide, the Channel Planning Best Practices, and run the DMX Patch Sheet Generator for documentation.
