How to Set Up a DMX Lighting System for Small Venues
A step-by-step guide to planning and setting up a reliable DMX lighting system for small venues.
How to Set Up a DMX Lighting System for Small Venues
Small venues need lighting that is reliable, fast to set up, and easy to operate. This guide walks through a practical setup process that avoids common mistakes.
1. Define the goal
Decide if the system is for live shows, ambient scenes, or both. Clear goals help you choose fixtures and control methods.
2. Choose fixtures and modes
Use fixtures that expose the features you need without excessive channel count. Simpler modes are easier to manage and more reliable for small systems.
3. Plan addressing and universes
Map addresses before you plug in anything. Avoid overlaps and keep a simple layout. One universe is enough for most small venues.
4. Use proper cabling and termination
Use DMX-rated cable and a 120 ohm terminator at the end of the chain. Avoid T-splits and microphone cable.
5. Test, then save a base scene
Test each fixture and save a default scene you can always return to. It is the fastest way to recover during a show.
6. Consider automation carefully
Automation can help with repeating scenes, but keep a manual override for live events.
Where Y-Link fits
Y-Link is designed for fast setup and reliable control, combining modern workflows with deterministic timing.
Y-Link is not yet publicly released. If you want early access, you can apply for the pilot program.
